Citroen: 20 years ago farewell to 2CV

On July 27, twenty years ago, went out of production, Citroen 2CV , a car that has driven the car a symbol of France, like the VW Beetle in Germany and the Fiat 500 in Italy. The idea of the 2CV was born in 1935 by Michelin , at that time the majority shareholder of the Double Chevron. All through the TPV project - short for Toute Petite Voiture - who left the following year. Development of the car also participated in President Pierre Boulanger, while the technique was entrusted to André Lefèbvre and design of the bodywork was designed from Italian Flaminio Bertoni. But the project was interrupted by the outbreak of World War II.


The car that debuted at the Paris Salon of 1948. The name derives from the power of taxation and it was a car key, very practical, economical, strong, versatile and dedicated to a universal customer. The Citroen 2CV was originally equipped with two horizontally opposed engine - air cooled - 375-cc and 9 hp, coupled with 3-speed manual transmission. The 2CV presented as the innovative front-wheel drive, advanced suspension, body 4-door 4-seater cabin and large boot, because the car was longer than 380 cm. However, the market started September 22, 1949.

In '58 the range was enlarged version 4 × 4 called the Sahara, with two 12 hp motors positioned front and another one at the rear. Later, the twin engine 425 hp went from 12 to equip the production version of two-wheel drive. The range of the 2CV was revolutionized in 1970 when they debuted new versions and 2CV4 2CV6. The first was moved by a 26 hp engine 435 and the second was equipped with the powerful 602 hp by 33. Both engines were coupled to 4-speed manual gearbox. Citroen 2CV were derived from models Méhari , Ami 6 and 8 Ami, Dyane and Acadiane.
